Any way to get a watermelon plant to take up LESS room?

I told myself I would never plant another watermelon plant after it overtook my garden last year. But I coudln't resist today at the nursery. Any suggestions, tips, advice for growing a watermelon without it taking up so much room?? If not (which I am afraid of) I am currenlty checking out the backyard to see if I can find an open spot for it.
