Has the US ever considered digging deep trenches or setting up turrets or mines rather than fence our border?

Just read an article from Popular Mechanics about how the US sucks at building fences to protect our border. Why not just make deep valleys people can't get across or climb up, or set up mines so if they come across they get blown up? I mean this would sure deter me from trying to illegally enter another country.
